Satellite Backhaul for Rural Areas

Fully transparent, point-to-point Layer 2 backup connectivity over satellite for substations and critical assets in rural and remote areas.

The Challenge

Substations and other critical assets in rural and remote areas need reliable backup communications, but terrestrial backhaul is often unavailable or too costly to reach, and even where it exists it's vulnerable to the same kind of outages it's meant to back up.

Our Approach

Deploy ETX-1p IoT gateways at each remote RTU or substation site and an ETX-2v at the aggregation point acting as an IoT Hub, delivering fully transparent, point-to-point Layer 2 connectivity over satellite with per-site VLAN tagging into the power utility network via E-NNI.

Your Benefit

Reliable backup communications to rural and remote critical assets, with service continuity and rapid, seamless handover whenever the main fiber link is down.

How It Works

At each remote power substation, an RTU connects through a RAD ETX-1p IoT gateway, which carries traffic over the satellite network. On the aggregation side, a RAD ETX-2v receives the satellite traffic and hands it to the carrier network over an ENNI, which in turn connects into the power utility network. That path gives the utility a fully transparent L2 backup with per-site VLAN separation.
