Low risk, non-disruptive migration to packet-based operational WANs from TDM technology, using RAD’s Megaplex running an MPLS software appliance.



In this demo, we will show RAD’s OT-WAN MPLS solution – in action! RAD enables low risk, non-disruptive migration to packet-based operational WANs from TDM technology. This process can be broken into smaller steps, for example, a hybrid design, where each service can be carried in its native format. RAD’s Megaplex platform allows network operators to run TDM, Carrier Ethernet, IP/MPLS or MPLS-TP services using the same platform. They’re also able to implement additional functionalities, such as firewall.

We have here a representation of the OT WAN. The network is built of a Megaplex-1, two units of Megaplex-4 with MPLS cards that run the Juniper router function, and a physical MX-104 MPLS PE router.

We are running two services over the MPLS network: video traffic over a layer 3 VPN from the video server to the video client, and a serial service over VPLS between two high-speed bit error rate testers.

  1. First, we create end-to-end pseudowire services from each card, using the RADview service manager.
  2. Than we use the Juniper Connectivity Service Director to create MPLS services.
  3. Once created, we can see that both the IP and pseudowire services are up and running.

Now let’s see the MPLS network protection mechanism in action. What will happen when a physical link is disconnected, emulating a failure in hardware, or in the physical network.

When the link is disconnected, the service is immediately restored with the help of various protection mechanisms, such as MPLS card redundancy, MPLS Fast ReRoute and hitless pseudowire redundancy.

A single Megaplex MPLS service card can host additional networking functionalities. Here, we have pre-installed a vSRX firewall on each Megaplex MPLS service card.

RAD’s Operational WAN MPLS solution enables smooth and gradual migration to PSN. It:

  • Supports up to 1 Gig IP/MPLS
  • It provides full interop with IP/MPLS vendors in the network core, and also
  • Supports layer 2 VPLS, layer 3 VPN, MPLS-TE and MPLS-TP
