RAD’s CTO to Challenge SDN’s Positioning in Service Provider Networks in Opening Day Presentation at Ethernet/MPLS World Congress

Mar 18, 2013

RAD Data Communications’ Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Dr. Yaakov Stein, will deliver what promises to be a controversial view on the positioning of Software Defined Networking (SDN) in the service provider environment, at the 15th annual Ethernet/MPLS World Congress in Paris.

In a presentation entitled QoSDN: QoS Assured Networks Versus SDN, Dr. Stein will address SDN’s role in carrier networks, as opposed to its application to campus and Data Center scenarios. He will examine SDN’s premise as a disruptive architecture for communications and offer some caveats about SDN’s ability to ensure required capabilities for secure carrier-grade network infrastructure.

“Given all the hype about SDN, I believe that we need to take a close look at the technologies being proposed,” says Dr. Stein. “If SDN is merely yet another centralized management system, then its standardization may be a good idea, but it can hardly be considered novel. What is the impact of shunning distributed protocols? Is SDN able to give service providers the tools they need to deliver QoS-assured service and to deliver it profitably? Will SDN significantly impact the way service providers operate?”

Dr. Stein’s presentation takes place at 17:30 on Wednesday, March 20 and will be followed by the panel session If We Don't Have a Definition of What it Is, What Isn't SDN?, in which he will be one of the prominent panelists.

The Ethernet/MPLS World Congress will be held in parallel with the SDN Summit 2013 at the Hotel Marriott Rive Gauche in the French capital. In addition, RAD Data Communications will be exhibiting its Service Assured Access solutions during the three-day long event, from March 20-22, at Stand 303.
