Emir Halilovic joined GlobalData in 2017 as a Principal Analyst on the Service Provider Infrastructure (Global Telecom Technology & Software) team. His focus at GlobalData is on optical transport layer products and technology including WDM, OTN switching, OADMs, Packet Optical Networking, and converged IP/Optical platforms. He has a particular interest in how deep changes in service provider networks, like 5G, NFV and software-defined networking, affect the evolution of transport products and technologies.
CSPs need to satisfy growing capacity needs of data centers, enterprise HQs, and inter-operator interconnection by expanding capacity of their Ethernet services. To do all this, and support SDN in Ethernet access, a new breed of EAD is needed.
A lot of telcos expected to achieve “open networking nirvana” with vCPE, by stitching their solutions from software elements that run on off-the-shelf white boxes. But practicalities of deploying in live networks favor a more sophisticated approach, and vendors should combine strengths of open networking with telco-grade capabilities.
