ACCESS TRENDS

Developing Tomorrow's Access Network Today
by Professor Daniel Kofman, Chief Technology Officer

A major evolution in the way in which services are provisioned is now taking place in the communications industry.

Traditionally, services have been associated with a location, a type of terminal and a given access technology (for example, groupware installed on an office computer that's connected to a LAN; analog television received on a home TV set connected to a terrestrial antenna; voice services as far as a mobile signal can reach from the closest GSM antenna, etc.).

With the advent of the millennium, the process began of moving towards ubiquitous service availability and a global seamless mobility of services across different frontiers, including types of terminals, technologies and administrative domains. Moreover, services are converging. The fixed and mobile convergence that we see today is just a first step towards a world in which service components offered by different providers will be dynamically associated to create personalized services. Such personalized services will be both location and context-aware, and they will be ubiquitous. Full story

NEW PRODUCT

RIC-622GE Ethernet-to-SDH/SONET Converter

The RIC-622GE is an Ethernet-to-SDH/SONET converter designed to offer simple and efficient connection of two remote LANs over SDH or SONET infrastructure. The
RIC-622GE transmits Gigabit Ethernet traffic over STM-4/OC-12c lines. Equipped with a fiber optic STM-4/OC-12c interface, the RIC-622GE serves as a cost-effective alternative to ATM devices and routers. The RIC-622GE's encapsulation protocol enables virtually total utilization of SDH/SONET payload traffic, since only a small header is required. More details on RIC-622GE.

Gmux-2000 Central Office Voice Trunking Gateway

RAD's Gmux-2000 central office voice trunking gateway costs up to 30 percent less than the competition without excluding any feature required by a carrier-class central office platform. Maintaining toll quality voice, the Gmux-2000 voice trunking gateway can compress an entire STM-1 or up to 112 E1 lines onto as few as seven E1s, which translates to an impressive compression rate of 16:1. But what makes RAD's Gmux-2000 central office voice trunking gateway truly unique is that it can also transmit compressed voice over Gigabit Ethernet networks, providing quick payback by eliminating costly leased lines. This Gigabit Ethernet option also positions the Gmux-2000 voice trunking gateway as a one-of-a-kind, future-proof solution because it can continue to be used as the central office migrates to more cost-efficient packet switched networks (PSNs).More details on Gmux-2000.
