Small Form Factor Pluggable Transceivers

RAD’s SFP (small form-factor pluggable) transceivers are hot-swappable, input/output transceiver units converting optical and electrical media. Providing a wide range of detachable interfaces to multimode/single-mode optic fibers and UTP/coaxial electrical cables, they also allow the transport of Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet LAN packets over TDM-based WANs, as well as the transmission of E1/T1 streams over packet-switched networks. In addition to facilitating efficient design of host devices and flexible network planning, RAD’s miniature transceiver units enable significant savings in system maintenance and upgrade costs.

Benefits
Further Information
  • Fiber optic or electrical transceiver units, providing pluggable interfaces to multimode/single-mode optic fibers and UTP/coaxial electrical cables
  • System-on-an-SFP architecture, providing internal logical frame conversion
  • MSA (Multi-source Agreement) compliant
  • Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet to E1/T1 or E3/T3 remote bridging
  • TDM pseudowire connectivity
  • Built-in DDM (digital diagnostic monitoring) function
  • 64 to 2016-byte frames, including VLAN-tagged frames
  • LOS (loss of signal) fault propagation
  • Flow control mechanism

  • Reduce CapEx by enabling high port density per host device
  • Provide an economical alternative to dedicated standalone units
  • Lower OpEx by allowing on-site, partial module replacements for repairs and upgrades
  • Simplify network planning and allow quick and easy installations with an intuitive squeeze-and-pull mechanism
  • Leverage TDM infrastructure for transporting new Ethernet services
  • Support delivery of legacy TDM services over cost-effective packet transport
  • Interoperable with standard third party routers and switches

SFP (small form-factor pluggable) transceivers (SFPs) are hot-swappable input/output optical and electrical transceiver units, each providing a different interface according to known compliance standards and pre-determined specifications.

The units are plugged into other products to provide the required interface, thus enabling optimal combination of CapEx reduction, ease of network planning and stock flexibility.

RAD's SFP transceivers are fully compliant with the multisource agreement (MSA) specifications, and are fully interoperable with third-party standards-based devices.

On account of their small size, SFPs allow higher port densities than with other transceivers, resulting in more efficient host device design.

Note: It is strongly recommended to order RAD devices with original RAD SFPs installed. This will ensure that prior to shipping, RAD has performed comprehensive functional quality tests on the entire assembled unit, including the SFP devices. RAD cannot guarantee full compliance to product specifications for units using non-RAD SFPs. For detailed specifications of the SFP transceivers, see the SFP transceivers data sheet.
