Fast Ethernet over STM-1/OC-3 NTU

RIC-155: Fast Ethernet over STM-1/OC-3 Intelligent Converter

Product Summary

RAD’s RIC-155 Fast Ethernet over STM-1/OC-3 network termination unit bridges Fast Ethernet LANs over an STM-1/OC-3 uplink, providing carriers and service providers with a migration path for connecting future-ready IP devices with Fast Ethernet interfaces, into existing SDH/SONET networks at 155 Mbps access rates.

An intelligent Fast Ethernet to STM-1/OC-3 converter, RIC-155’s typical applications include IP backhaul between POPs, transporting Fast Ethernet traffic over 155 Mbps microwave links, or extending high bandwidth private line services over SDH/SONET networks. Using VLAN tagging and stacking, Ethernet traffic can be transported transparently, keeping user VLAN settings intact.

Benefits

• Fast and easy deployment of Ethernet services over SDH/SONET networks

• Ideal for large enterprises, inter-POP connectivity

• Interoperable with standards-based third party devices

• Minimize service disruption and reduce operating costs via sophisticated diagnostic tools

Further Product Information

Fast Ethernet LANs over STM-1/OC-3 uplinks

RIC-155 is a network termination unit (NTU) for simple, efficient and cost-effective transport of Fast Ethernet traffic over STM-1/OC-3 lines. The device enables carriers and service providers to easily extend their customer reach over 155 Mbps microwave links and legacy SDH/SONET backbones. A VLAN tagging and stacking option supports transparent inter-LAN connectivity and keeps all the user VLAN settings intact.

An intelligent 10/100BaseT to STM-1/OC-3 converter and Ethernet extender, RIC-155’s unique features make it ideal for the following applications:

• Connecting large enterprises over SDH/SONET

• Backhauling IP traffic between POPs

• Economical alternative to STM-1/OC-3c router interface

Advanced management options

A large variety of optical modules, as well as a coax interface, facilitate connection to other standard STM-1/OC-3 devices. RADview-Lite, RAD’s new RADview service package provides SNMP fault management, including SNMP traps, status polling and TFTP-based software and configuration download. Remote element management is available either through the ConfiguRAD Web-based application, or Telnet.

RIC-155 can be managed in-band, either locally, from the Fast Ethernet user port, or remotely, through the STM-1/OC-3 port. The device can also be managed out-of-band via the craft port or a dedicated 10/100BaseT port.

Management traffic and user Ethernet traffic are transported together on the same Ethernet flow, separated by different VLANs. Complete separation between user traffic and the management traffic ensures management and user traffic security.

The device collects Ethernet physical layer and STM-1/OC-3 statistics for monitoring the SDH/SONET connection and the Ethernet service. In cases of severe error conditions on the SDH/SONET interface, an optional fault propagation feature tears down the link integrity on the Ethernet port, indicating to the Ethernet network the error conditions on the TDM network, enabling connected routers to reroute the traffic.

The RIC-155 is a 1U-high, half 19-inch wide non-modular box with a rack mount option. It is available with an AC or DC power supply.
