Broadband Access

Broadband access, often referred to as broadband Internet or just broadband, is a high data-transmission rate connection over ATM, DSL, cable modem, or Metro Ethernet links. Broadband access initially related to popular consumer and business broadband technologies for Internet usage over high-speed digital subscriber lines. More recently, the term broadband access has been widened to include any high-speed transport of user data and voice traffic over a single “broadband” access network.

To enable fast and cost-effective broadband communications, service providers deploy broadband access devices at their customers’ premises. These devices are paired with a DSLAM or switch at the operator’s central office. Broadband access devices are used to deliver multiple services, including Ethernet, voice, video, and Internet access, over the broadband access network.
