RAD Service Assured Access Solution Demonstrates Carrier Ethernet and Timing Synchronization Interoperability at EANTC’s Ethernet World Showcase

Results Will Optimize Performance and Reduce Costs of Retail and Wholesale Services, LTE Macro and Small Cell Infrastructure
Oct 02, 2013

RAD is currently participating in the multi-vendor Interoperability Showcase organized by the European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC) at the Ethernet World and SDN & NFV Summit 2013 in Prague.

Together with devices from other leading vendors, RAD’s Service Assured Access solution successfully demonstrated the interoperability of timing synchronization over packet networks and Carrier Ethernet solutions. The test network in which it participated focused on the latest advances in the industry, including packet-based macro and small-cell backhaul, Carrier Ethernet 2.0 transport and managed service lifecycle.

Stringent New Requirements
“With increased deployment of LTE and LTE Advanced services, timing synchronization requirements are becoming much more stringent,” notes Yacov Cazes, RAD’s Director of Business Development. “Methods like IEEE 1588v2 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) and Synchronous Ethernet, which RAD has incorporated into its Service Assured Access solution, now need to be deployed,” he adds. “EANTC’s interoperability event was an excellent test bed for these sophisticated functions.”

Among other Service Assured Access elements to be tested was RAD’s recently unveiled Distributed Grandmaster concept, which combines its Cell Site Gateway with a GPS-based PTP Grandmaster, allowing the Grandmaster to be positioned close to the PTP slaves. “This reduces the risk of clock infrastructure failures and reduces PDV and timing asymmetry, all of which negatively affect timing synchronization accuracy,” Cazes explains.

RAD also successfully demonstrated full support for IEEE 1588v2 PTP, including slave, transparent clock, boundary clock, and Grandmaster functions, attesting to the ability of its ETX-2 Carrier Ethernet Demarcation Device to generate, terminate or be in the path of PTP.

RAD’s ETX-2 and MiNID Ethernet Demarcation SFP Sleeve demonstrated Carrier Ethernet functionalities including fault management on a multipoint-to-multipoint EVC, performance monitoring per CoS for a point-to-point EVC and performance monitoring per CoS for a multipoint-to-multipoint EVC. These, together with other existing functionalities such as service turn up testing with RFC-2544/Y.1564 and a performance monitoring portal, enable Carrier Ethernet service to be monitored and maintained across its full lifecycle.

Finally RAD demonstrated Ethernet Ring Protection Switching (ERPS) based on ITU-T G.8032, allowing standard ring topology with fast protection switching. “This is yet another step in positioning Carrier Ethernet as an alternative to SDH/SONET rings,” Cazes concludes.

A detailed description outlining RAD’s participation in 2013 Ethernet World interoperability showcase can be found in EANTC white paper and is available on both the EANTC and RAD web sites.
