The increased market demand for new packet-based services is forcing critical infrastructure operators – such as utilities, transportation companies and government agencies – to lease backhaul services from third-party providers. These are typically provided over packed-switched networks (PSNs), which employ various technologies (Carrier Ethernet, MPLS-TP and IP-MPLS) and different access options (fiber, copper and microwave).

To ensure visibility throughout this maze, third-party backhaul performance has to be well monitored to ensure it meets exacting requirements. This is accomplished through service level agreements (SLAs), which are a must for critical infrastructure (CI) applications.

RAD’s Service Assured Networking (SAN) solutions help CI operators to monitor such third-party backhaul performance, including actual throughput testing and dying gasp functionality, providing full end-to-end visibility and allowing service level assurance across the backhaul network.

RAD’s SAN solutions include MiNID SFP sleeve device, an intelligent microprobe that plugs into networking equipment at any remote site.

MiNID is suited for network SLA upgrades since it efficiently reuses existing equipment and SFPs when plugged into networking devices from any vendor. The sleeve design is ideal because it is transparent to the i2C channel between the mux/switch/router and the SFP, allowing them to share SFP parameters for monitoring and diagnostic purposes.

RAD’s PM Controller is a central generator for always-on performance monitoring, on-demand testing and troubleshooting. Additional testing and diagnostic software applications can be added on the fly using a hotpluggable x86 server.

The powerful RADview Performance Monitoring Portal collects, analyzes and reports key performance indicator (KPI) data. This allows critical infrastructure operators to easily monitor actual network and service performance over time and compare it to service requirements and SLA guarantees.
