It is estimated that the number of legacy point-to-point microwave links installed in the
U.S. that are more than ten to fifteen years old is in the tens of thousands. Typically, these
links supply TDM interfaces such as OC-3, DS-3, multiple T1s or a single T1. Although still
perfectly functional, most do not provide native support for the transport of Ethernet.
Since many of today's applications are built on an Ethernet foundation, it is much more
efficient to transport this traffic over Ethernet-based metropolitan and wide area
networks. However, service providers and other organizations that own their own
telecommunications facilities often prefer solutions that will enable them to squeeze more
life out of their legacy investments. What's needed is an economical way to transport
Ethernet across these existing TDM radio links.
The RICi Family of Ethernet access devices from RAD Data Communications was designed
to efficiently carry Ethernet traffic across TDM links including a single T1, multiple T1s, DS-
3, OC-3 or OC-12 speeds. As “layer 2” devices, RICi units are simple to install, configure
and operate. Compared to typical layer 2/3 switch or router alternatives, the RICi family is
much more economical and effective.

The RICi family includes units optimized for virtually all types and sizes of legacy microwave
radio links. Operating with minimal overhead, RICi devices provide maximum throughput
while minimizing latency.
The RICi family is part of RAD's comprehensive line of Ethernet access devices for extension, demarcation and concentration of Ethernet services over TDM networks. With rate versatility ranging from T1 and bonded T1 to OC-12, RAD’s sophisticated EtherAccess product suite delivers seamless mid-band Ethernet, Fast Ethernet (FE) and Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) connectivity over PDH access circuits and SONET transport networks.
