Turkey’s Leading Carriers’ Carrier is Ready to Serve

Application

Voice Compression for Alternative Carriers

Challenge

Cut international voice trunking costs over national carrier

Solution

Vmux-2100 units are deployed at regional POPs to compress voice trunks before transport over national SDH network

Benefits

  • Lower leased line costs
  • High quality voice
  • Fast payback
  • Small size, easy installation

Televersal Telecommunications Inc., based in Turkey, provides international call carriers with access to an efficient global network for transporting voice on the Internet with little or no additional capital expenditure on their part. With major stations in Miami, London, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, New Delhi, Singapore, Vienna, and the Middle East, Televersal provides its partners full access to more than 200,000 ports worldwide and capacity of over 2 billion minutes per month. Together with major partner Ntera, a leading ITSP (Internet Telephony Service Provider) operating in North America and Mexico, Televersal now offers an international switching capacity of four billion minutes monthly.

Following the Turkish government’s decision to liberalize the Turkish telecommunication market, Televersal was one of the first companies to sign the landmark August 2004 privatization agreement and to meet the strict infrastructure requirements of the Turkish Regulatory Body and the incumbent Turk Telekom. “Since the privatization agreement, Televersal is the company that has made the largest network infrastructure investment in Turkey, establishing points of presence (POPs) in 11 cities with 24 PBX switch points. With this layout we can cover the entire country, and are one of the few new carriers that have already begun to provide services,” states Can Kıral, Chairman of Televersal Telecommunications Inc. “So that we can offer our customers better margins to more destinations, Televersal capitalizes on the latest advances in telecom and operations technology available in the market.”

Vmux-2100 Lowers Voice Trunking Expenses

RAD’s Vmux-2100 voice trunking gateway is part of that investment. International voice traffic is transported from Televersal’s Class 5 switches at its headquarters in Istanbul, to the regional POPs over the Turk Telekom national SDH network. “E1 leased line costs make up a substantial part of Televersal’s operating expenses. To cut these costs, Televersal chose the Vmux-2100 with its powerful compression algorithms,“ reports Baris Dokuz, Project Manager at Norm Telecom, RAD’s authorized local distributor who helped design the solution for Televersal. The multi-port Vmux-2100 greatly increases the amount of voice traffic that can be transmitted over the same trunk, compressing up to 16 full E1 lines (480 concurrent calls) onto a single E1 line, while providing the highest voice quality.

In the first phase of the project, Vmux-2100 gateways were deployed in eight different regional POPs, each unit connecting 8 to 12 E1 voice trunks. The voice trunks were then compressed into a single E1 for transport over the SDH network. At Televersal’s headquarter site in Istanbul, another eight Vmux units decompressed the traffic for connection to the switches. After the initial success, additional Vmux-2100 units were deployed to connect six more sites. “We were certainly pleased that the Vmux was able to save us money while still providing the high-level of voice quality expected by our international partners,” says Kıral.

Connects International Carriers to Local GSM Service Provider

To provide interconnection between international carriers and mobile services, Televersal hooked up with Telsim, a leading GSM operator in Turkey. Telsim provides coverage throughout 81 cities within Turkey, employing a network of over 4,400 radio base stations, and also provides international roaming with 309 network operators in 144 countries. The connection with Telsim is also over the national SDH network, with the Vmux again playing a role, compressing voice traffic from four E1s into a single E1 link, significantly reducing transport costs.
