Challenge

To provision advanced voice and data services to SMEs, and leased line services for corporate Internet and data access

Solution

RAD’s LA-140 and LA-110 ATM integrated access devices (IADs) deploy ISDN voice and Ethernet over ADSL links, and CES leased line services over SHDSL links

Benefits

  • High quality
  • Competitive price
  • Support for mixed DSL flavors

EdisonTel, the Italian telecommunications company controlled by Edison S.p.A., selected RAD’s LA-140 and LA-110 ATM integrated access devices (IADs) to deploy ISDN voice and Ethernet over ADSL links for small and medium-sized business customers throughout Italy. In addition, EdisonTel will deploy RAD IADs to provide Circuit Emulation System (CES) leased line services over its ATM/SHDSL infrastructure. The equipment is being supplied and integrated by CIE Telematica, RAD’s Milan-based authorized distributor.

performance of the RAD equipment and the service
and support we have received from CIE Telematica.

Technical Director, EdisonTel

The unbundling of the Local Loop in Italy has created tremendous opportunities for EdisonTel to pioneer VoDSL deployment and attract many new business customers looking for high quality voice and Internet access over a single ADSL link. RAD’s integrated access devices, which support ISDN voice as well as Ethernet in a compact, cost-effective unit, deliver the required features and quality at a very competitive price.

“EdisonTel has already deployed several hundred LA-140 units, with hundreds of additional LA-110 devices expected to be installed shortly,” says Fabrizio Bellezza, EdisonTel’s Technical Director. “We are extremely satisfied with the quality and performance of the RAD equipment and the service and support we have received from CIE Telematica.”

EdisonTel’s coverage area for the ADSL service varies between 1.2 and 1.5 km (0.75–0.94 miles), with available bandwidth on the links ranging from 512 kbps to 2 Mbps in adaptive mode.

In addition to the ATM-based VoDSL network deployment, RAD and CIE have begun to supply EdisonTel with LA-140 IADs to roll out an ATM leased line SHDSL service, based on CES, that will run over the EdisonTel backbone.

“EdisonTel’s forecast is to double the number of its SHDSL service subscribers over the next six months,” states Luigi Meregalli, CEO and founder of CIE Telematica. “We expect that RAD’s IADs will account for a significant part of this new network deployment.”
