Optimux-1553

STM-1/OC-3 Terminal Multiplexer

RAD’s Optimux-1553 STM-1/OC-3 terminal multiplexer combines three E3 or T3 tributary channels into a single STM-1/OC-3 uplink, extending TDM services point-to-point over coax or fiber to remote locations up to 80 kilometers (50 miles).

NEBS-3 cerified, the Optimux-1553 STM-1/OC-3 terminal multiplexer provides an extremely reliable platform that maximizes uptime for any mission-critical application.

Applications
  • Connects slower rate PDH services over a single STM-1/OC-3 (155 Mbps) link
  • Channelized STM-1/OC-3 main link with standard fiber optic (single mode, multimode and WDM) or coaxial interface
  • Multiplexes three E3 or three T3 tributary channels
  • Supports 1+1 unidirectional automatic protection switching (APS) on STM-1/OC-3 uplink, 1+1 protection on DS1 or DS3 tributaries and power supply modules
  • Provides a demarcation point between the carrier network and the customer network
  • Includes SNMP agent, RS-232 and Ethernet management ports
  • Configuration, service, performance, security, and fault management via ASCII terminal, Telnet or RADview network management systems
  • Range up to 80 km (50 miles)
  • Plug-and-play installation and operation
  • Compact: 1U high, 19”
  • Cuts leased circuit costs and saves on costly ports on the SDH/SONET ADM by consolidating traffic at the edge of the network
  • High capacity at a low cost
  • Plug-and-play installation and operation reduce the need for advanced technical training and save on installation and support time
  • Eliminates cost, rack space and management complexity by integrating multiple user ports into a compact platform
  • Carrier-class redundancy improves network quality of service and protects critical network traffic at all times

The Optimux-1553 STM-1/OC terminal multiplexer delivers traditional PDH services over existing SDH or SONET networks. It combines the high capacity associated with SDH/SONET add/drop multiplexers (ADMs) with the simplicity and low cost of a terminal multiplexer, significantly reducing operating and capital expenses.

High capacity in a compact unit

The 1U-high Optimux-1553 provides connectivity for up to three E3 or three T3 lines. The product complies with all SDH/SONET standards, and interfaces with existing SDH/SONET backbones through a single or redundant STM-1, OC-3 or STS-3.

Carrier-class design

Designed for the rigorous requirements of carriers and service providers, the Optimux-1553 SDH/SONET terminal multiplexer offers a high level of reliability and manageability. Hardware redundancy is designed into the system without the need for custom Y-cables or external devices. This 1+1 redundancy is provided for all user interfaces through an optional second, hot-swappable multiplexer card. 1+1 redundancy is also available for the STM-1/OC-3 main link (unidirectional APS/MSP) and power supply modules. This reliable platform maximizes uptime for mission-critical applications. A fully equipped Optimux-1553 occupies a 1U, 19” shelf.

Higher revenues at lower cost

The Optimux-1553 STM-1/OC terminal multiplexer allows service providers to extend their network to remote customers, thereby enlarging their customer reach and increasing revenues, without the expenses associated with deploying high-end ADMs, which add unnecessary cost and complexity in “point to network” connections. Instead of deploying PDH multiplexers at customer sites, the Optimux-1553 interfaces directly with the existing SDH/SONET TDM infrastructure and consolidates traffic at the edge of the network. This enables service providers to save the cost of fiber deployment and of multiple ports on the ADM.

Plug-and-play operation

Easy to install, maintain and operate, Optimux-1553 requires no training or expertise. A completely plug-and-play unit, the product allows carriers to extend the benefits of SDH/SONET networks to the customer premises or central office in a quick and inexpensive manner.

Typical applications

The Optimux-1553 STM-1/OC terminal multiplexer is especially suitable for extending SDH/SONET network services to remote and suburban locations such as industrial areas and business parks. It is the ideal choice for delivering E3 or T3 services.

The Optimux-1553 STM-1/OC terminal multiplexer can be deployed in point-to-point applications (Figure 1), connecting two sites over fiber, to distances of up to 80 km (50 miles). In Figure 2, a service provider uses Optimux-1553 to provide E3 or T3 lines to large enterprises with higher bandwidth requirements. Together with Optimux-34 (for E3) or Optimux-45/45L (for T3), RAD’s Optimux-1553 can be used to combine E1 or T1 and E3 or T3 services over a single STM-1/OC-3 line.
